Hi Everyone. I just found this site and think it's great! The hubby and I are big TOD fans. We were a little disappointed that the series ended the way it did, so here is our take on how we think things ended. Please note that all the guys would be in their mid to late 50's now

LT. Goldman stayed in the Army until the end of the Vietnam war. Once back in the States and a civilian again, he pursued his dream of becoming an Eng. Lit professor. He is now teaching in a college town, is married, and has four children. His oldest son, LT. M. Goldman II, currently serves in Iraq.

1SG Zeke Anderson returned to Fort Bragg after the Vietnam war was over. He stayed in the Army and finally retired after serving 23 years. He still lives in Fayetteville, has remarried, is a grandfather, and is a military consultant for military shows and movies.

LT. McKay, unable to handle civilian flying, managed to return to active duty training new helicopter pilots. Although unable to fly combat missions himself, his experience was invaluable to those that came after him. These days, McKay lives in Hawaii and is co-owner and main pilot of a helicopter tour company.

Johnson earned his college degree and became a successful businessman and civil rights champion. He's retired now, but is still active in the civil rights movement.

Percell stayed in construction and eventually started up his own company. He lives a nice quiet life in Montana with his second wife.

Taylor also made the military a career, serving 20 years. Nowadays, he uses his gift of gab selling cars. He never married, but remains a ladies man to this day.

Ruiz never made it out of the Bronx. He continued working at the warehouse, got married, and raised two daughters. He managed to save some money over the years and, with some backing from Taylor, (remember, they talked about this once)opened a small, but profitable restaurant. He's content in life and when the guys get together, they all gather at his restaurant where they enjoy Ruiz's mother's recipes.

Baker and his brother both made it back home after Vietnam, though Karl was wounded in the leg and has walked with a limp ever since. Both are still body building buffs, though age is catching up to them. They own the Baker Bros. Surf Shop in Southern California.

Doc Hock had the hardest journey back from Vietnam. He managed to survive the bombing of Saigon (God loves fools, little children, and animals, you know),but his slide into the bottle grew with each day. Somehow, he managed to serve his time and returned home. Unable to find a job or climb out of the bottle, his situation looked hopeless until a chance meeting with a soldier whose life he had once saved. This guy, with the help of the VA, got Doc Hock back on the right track. Doc got himself sober, earned a degree in nursing, and now works at a VA hospital.

Sorry this is kinda long and didn't cover everyone, but this is how I would have liked the story to end.

Hi Marie,

& Welcome to Hum90.
It's always nice to hear from new fans
You've obviously followed the show closely.
I think you have written some very plausible
endings for the mainstream characters of
Tour of Duty. The only thing I question is
that only doc Hock hit the bottle. I think
after what they went through over there,
'all' of them would have ended up alcoholics
when they got home, and needed someone to
save them from self destruction.
(with the single exception being Scott
Baker. Being the health nut he is, I couldnt
see him abusing his body by consuming
excessive amounts of alcohol)

LOL...
There seem to be a lot of hubby's &
wives hooked on TOD.
I think that says a lot for the show. That
it not only managed to attract both sexes
and keep them watching back in the 80's, but
its still attracting both the sexes today.
I know my husband and I watched it together
religiously every Friday night way back in
the late 1980's. We were in our early 20's
then.

And here we are in 2006, almost 20 yrs
later, rewatching the series on DVD and
enjoying it all over again.
We just never tire of it.
We both used to get annoyed if we missed it.
And would curse our VCR if it didnt record
an episode properly LOL.
How many shows on tv these days could keep a
married couple in on a Friday night and
happily glued to the box? I dont think
there'd be too many. Especially a show based
on the war? Take Mash and China Beach for
instance? I loved the earlier episodes with
Henry Blake and Trapper, and Frank. But my
husband never really got into it. Whereas my
husband loved China Beach, (i think for Dana
whatsername) yet I hated the show. truly
hated it! And the newest war drama Over
there, (very similar to TOD, but based in
Iraq, not Vietnam) while it was ok, it didnt
have me riveted to my sofa the way TOD did.
And my husband didnt watch one single episode.
So Tour of Duty really is something pretty special.

LOL. Welcome Marie! It was a delight reading your and your husband's take on the characters post-ToD. I thought they were true to the characters, especially regarding Doc, McKay, and Taylor.

I also agree that, after what they'd been through, they all could use a lot of support coming home, with the single possible exception of Baker. Not only was he a health nut, he seemed to have an easygoing, carefree attitude that bordered on obliviousness, a healthy detachment. Not to say that he was insensitive or unaware, but he had a way of letting things roll off his back. With the exception of the episode "Brothers, Fathers, and Sons," the war never got too personal for him, and I think he had a kind of buffer that would have helped him make it out of 'Nam less emotionally scathed than the others. It also probably helped that he didn't spend as much time on the front lines as the rest of the guys did.

O/T: Lindy, that is a funny and sweet revelation about you and your husband staying in on Friday nights to watch ToD. I have not yet succeeded in getting my other half to give ToD a try (shame on me). When I mentioned ToD to him, he said he remembered it had a great opening song. Then he said he liked China Beach. Holy mackerel. I was like, "Um. Really?" I did not watch China Beach, so I can't comment on it, but I was not expecting that. Nonetheless our tastes are actually very similar. For example we both enjoyed Band of Brothers. I suggested he watch ToD, telling him to bear in mind that Band of Brothers was a 10-part movie that ran on pay cable, was made in 2001, was backed by the Tom Hanks-Steven Spielberg powerhouse, with production companies including DreamWorks, HBO, and BBC, whereas Tour of Duty was a TV show from the 80s that ran on network TV, its production company limping out of the '87 stock market crash. Mysteriously, he was not moved by my pitch. So I guess I'll have to keep telling him to just trust me already, Tour of Duty is something truly special.
