Post subject: Weekly Eppy Discussions: Ep. Pilot

I'm really excited about starting at the beginning and viewing the whole series through again. The most unual thing that popped out at me each time I watched TOD Eppy 1 was the way of recruitment. "I'm gonna go to town and buy a fresh batch of grunts." And I was always telling the guys to put their headgear on. I know the whole TV thing but my little military training still kicks in. Yet the show took off and really told it like it is with respect to the real issues of the Vietnam war. It turned out to be very honest and straightforward.

Camp Ladybird was a much smaller contingent of forces and they were more remote. They were almost over run. At this basecamp, the Captain was the highest rank there. I really love and enjoy TOD.

I remember the first time I saw the Pilot episode many years ago I though "WOW, that was brilliant" - everyone was talking about it next night in the pub. I couldn't wait for the next episode. It kept me going back for more, and still wanting more all this years later

Yeah. TOD sure has the "WOW FACTOR" LOL
I was just like you Sheila.
Loved every single minute.
Was desperate for more after the first mind blowing episode. Just couldnt get enough of it.
Everyone was talking about it here in OZ.
I remember Terence knox being on the front page of almost every TV magazine. And thinking he was pretty *hot* for a 40 year old LOL.
TOD was very popular here when it first aired.
I remember sitting around the lunch table at work, with a few g/friends of mine, discussing who we liked the most LOL. Needless to say, we had very ~long~ lunch breaks LOL.
And didnt get a lot of work done.
Especially on Mondays.

We love any excuse to rewatch episodes LOL
Im looking forward to chatting with you tomorrow.
As for the recruiting issue, I always wondered whether recruits really were hand picked like the Sarge did in the Pilot episode. Or whether a Unit just got whoever they were sent, and that was final!
One part in the pilot, although entertaining, I found a little far-fetched was when Zeke had no choice but to lie very still in the grass, the VC about to trample right over the top of him, and he jumps up and starts shooting on the run, and survives.
He got all the way back to Ladybird with barely a scratch.
(for which im extremely happy and grateful.LOL.) But I think in reality,....he wouldnt have survived.

the first TOP episode I watched was in reruns a couple of yrs ago on History Channel: ROADRUNNER. I had seen all 3 seasons when I finally watched episode #1!! It was weird to see a much younger looking LT! Danny & the LT changed the most over the seasons. I got hooked on the "team spirit" aspect of the show right away PS:and Danny's blue eyes!!! sorry CJAY

I used to hear my other half talking about ToD when it first aired on British TV...he used to stay up to watch it as it was shown at about 3a.m. our time, my kids were very young at that time and every minute of sleep was precious to me so needless to say I didn't watch. However he used to talk about what a great show it was....the young naieve lieutenant being shown the ropes by the older seasoned sargeant(who really ran the platoon).
How things have changed in my household, my husband has all but forgotten ToD existed, I however have become obsessed ever since watching the re-runs on FX UK and of course becoming totally captivated by the gorgeous Myron. LOL.

The Pilot episode really set the standard for what was to come, and I still think season 1 was probably the best of all.

You're talking about that bit with Zeke being far fetched, in Acceptable Losses - numerous times, specially the end running down the river, Taylor & Ru had lots of VC right behind them shooting and they missed everytime. Each time I see that episode it amazes me what bad shots the VC were.

No, I don't think in real life the VC would have missed them!!! It is strange on ToD that everybody seems to be bad shots when it came down to it!
Think maybe it had something to do with it being on TV during primetime when kids were watching too? Cause you know you're not going to miss somebody that is inches from you...especially in war! TV censorship!
Annelies...you just saw Tour of Duty 2 years ago?

Wow! I saw it when it first aired! But sorry, I forget you don't here in the States. And no apologies necessary...YES Tony does have beautiful blue eyes!!!

We watch American TV in Montreal!! I remember catching TOD "by accident" when it first aired, but I became a real fan a couple of years ago, History Channel, never missed an episode, would tape it if I couldn't be in front of the tv- Fingers crossed for a reunion show!
