Post subject: Chat Room Tips for Logging In - Feel Free to Add as Needed

Posted: Mon May 07, 2007 06:31:17

Hey guys,

Thought I'd start a thread here for troubleshooting problems with logging into the chat room. (Technology, isn't it great? ;) It's so interdependent on everything on the Web working just right, from your computer to my computer to this server to that server to the sun and the moon and the alignment of Jupiter. LOL)

I'll start a list of things you might want to check, in case you have problems getting into the chat room. And since it depends on so many things, and since you guys most likely know your own computer setup better than I do, feel free to add your own help tips--they will be valuable to helping others.

Here goes... (one post per tip, to make it more readable):

Post subject: Tip #1: Click "Trust" or "Run"

1. Click "Trust" or "Run" in the pop-up window
After you click the "join the chat" button at the chat room login page, you may be asked whether to trust the certificate that the applet (the chat application) uses, or whether to run the application. Click "Trust" or "Run."

Post subject: Tip #2: Download Java software

2. Download Java software
You need Java software in order to use the chat room. Most computers already come with Java installed, but your computer might not have it or you may need to update your version of Java software.

Download Java from this website:

Post subject: Tip #3: Check your firewall's block list

Posted: Mon May 07, 2007 06:41:19

3. Check your firewall's block list
For example, let's say you're getting this error message:

"Unable to connect. No route to host exception, no route to host: connect"

The computer that the chat room is running off of (which changes constantly) might be on your firewall's block list. Remove the chat room computer's IP address from your block list.

Sheila, can you fill in the blanks on how you figured this out (e.g., how did you know the chat room's computer was in your block list, and how did you remove it from your block list)?

Post subject: Tip #4: Wait & try again (aka 'I've been banned!')

Posted: Thu Jul 19, 2007 21:41:03

4. Wait and try again...

You try to log in and you get an error message that says you've been banned from the chat room.

Surely it wasn't something you said, right? I mean, surely. All you did was type your name, for cryin' out loud. So why the rejection, why the door in the face, why, why, why?!

Well, believe me, it's nothin' personal, and it's definitely not my doing.
Here's the Why and the What You Can Do About It:

The Why
The chat room uses a rotating network of web servers (aka, Internet Relay Chat or IRC servers) that are not owned by me nor under my control. When an IRC server bans someone, it bans by IP address, which is a number used to identify--among other things--specific computers or shared web servers. Unless you have a dedicated IP address as part of your internet service, your IP address changes all the time.

There's basically two things that have to get along in order for your chat session to work:

1) your connection, as identified by the IP address that your computer is currently using; and
2) the IRC server that the chat room is currently using.

Each time you log into the chat room, either or both of these things could change.

When you're banned, it's because the current IRC server doesn't like your current IP address. There are many possible reasons for this, including but not limited to:

1) some computer which had had the same IP address as you is a known
source of spam;
2) your computer has viruses and is a known source of spam.

Since I don't run the network of IRC servers that the chat room uses, there's no way for me to know exactly why each instance of banning occurs. Why can't we all just get along, right? Well, there's just no accounting for the love between machines, lemme tell ya.

The What You Can Do About It

1) wait a while and try again ;

The IRC server that the chat room uses constantly changes randomly.
Next time it switches to another IRC server, that IRC server may not
have your IP address on its banned list. Additionally, your IP address
might change to another IP address over time, depending on your internet
service, and that new IP address may not be on the banned list of
whatever IRC server the chat room happens to be using at the time.

2) use a different computer that has a different internet connection
(this is bound to give you a different IP address); or

3) get a dedicated IP address as part of your internet service
so that only your household uses your IP address. You'd be no longer be affected by other people's "internet reputations" in this regard, and this may help keep your computer off of banned lists in the future.

Very remiss of me - I meant to come back to this at the time and forgot.

Okay, on IE, go to Tools then Internet Options

Under Content Advisor click on enable

Then Approved Sites

At the time I had problems, for some weird reason the chat room was showing as a disapproved site. I honestly can't remember if I had to just delete it from the list or put the address in the accept this site section. I know I did it by trial and error.

Hope this helps

Cool, thanks, Sheila. Hope you didn't mind being put on the spot there. But you're such a whiz with this stuff. :-)

(wiping the tears of laughter away) If only you knew - I've just spent a whole week tearing my hair out trying to solve the simplest of problems. Been up late, couldn't sleep wondering what was wrong, trawled through all the help pages, emailed Microsoft and HP. Uninstalled and reinstalled things. You know what I think the problem was? Don't think I had it plugged in properly! - If it wasn't so funny I think I'd cry - lmao.

Post subject: Tip #5: Clear out or delete temporary files & cookies

Posted: Mon Oct 01, 2007 12:39:28

Getting error messages such as these?

Unable to connect : cannot access
Unable to connect : java.security.AccessControlException : access denied
java.net.ConnectException : Connection refused
"Unable to connect:null"

For a technical answer from the chat room's Help page, read this:
http://www.pjirc.com/help.php?p=0&faq_id=14

One thing that might be happening is your Internet cache is serving files from an older version of the applet (chat application).

Try clearing out your temporary Internet files, and cookies, then try getting into the chat room again.
