[1:42] Flares Dropping In The Night Sky
[2:21] Squad Holed Up In Bunker
ERCOLANI: Memorizing that letter for a game show, Danny?
PERCELL: Yeah, my girl, or... used to be. Ah, it ain't no big deal.
HAZZARD: No? Your rodeo queen? Yeah, I'll bet some Jody's circling that right now. Guaranteed.
RUIZ: Lay off it, Hazzard, okay? Some people got feelings.
HAZZARD: Oh yeah? Well I guess you're one real sensitive guy with the ladies, huh, Ruiz?
RUIZ: I got a girl waiting, yeah. I'm gonna get married when I get home, have a big wedding and a lot of little babies.
HAZZARD: Oh, great, just what we need: more Puerto Ricans. An' how you gonna support all these kids? Steal cars?
RUIZ: I got a cousin who books music acts. Salsa, rock 'n' roll, all over the Bronx and the Jersey shore. I'm gonna work for him.
ERCOLANI: Rock 'n' roll... the Jersey shore... all right.
RUIZ: Give me a break here, Danny?
PERCELL: Yeah.
PERCELL: You have to have x-ray vision to see anything out here tonight.
RUIZ: Like Superdude.
ERCOLANI: Ought to ring him up, tell him to grab his cape, and join the party.
HAZZARD: Yeah, some party. You know the thing I'm gonna remember most about this place is the smell. Smell of napalm, smell of flesh burnin'... Ain't nothin' that smells like 'Nam smells.
[4:20] VC Sneaking Up On Camp Ladybird
PERCELL: You know, when I was in ROTC, she liked the uniform. Now it's as if she don't even wanna write 'cause... I dunno, I got blood on my hands or somethin'.
PERCELL: Rodeo, Winnett, that's where I met her. Well she was the prettiest thing you'd ever seen. It was love at first sight.
[5:06] Danny Discovers VC Perimeter Violation
PERCELL: Hey! Hey, I've got movement in the wire. I got movement in the wire!
ERCOLANI: Blow the claymore.
[5:44] Casualty In The Bunker
PERCELL: Medic! Medic!
RUIZ: Percell, come on!
[6:15] Battered Ladybird In The Early Morning
POINT MAN: Well, not out the woods yet, the EOD's checking them for body traps.
GOLDMAN: Booby trap their own bodies?
ANDERSON: Yeah. Sappers. These guys can get through this wire like a needle through a screen door.
POINT MAN: Make you flat-out believe in ghosts, that's for damn sure.
WALLACE: Could have been a lot worse. We were lucky this time. Question is, what's Charlie's strength? If it's a new buildup, then we've still got to secure those bridges.
ANDERSON: Can I offer an opinion, sir?
WALLACE: Spit it out, Anderson. It's been a long night for everybody.
ANDERSON: Well that's my point exactly, sir. I mean everybody's very tired. The men are beat, they need a break.
WALLACE: I'll be sure to point that out to Battalion, Sergeant. [to Goldman] In the meantime you'll take the platoon, and you'll secure those bridges for the engineers. Police those bodies and bury them. Let's see if we can get the body count right this time, okay?
[7:28] Zeke and Danny Deal With Grief
ANDERSON: That Ercolani?
PERCELL: He just got married before he came over here.
ANDERSON: All right now, Percell, you let it go now. Otherwise it's gonna eat you up. Percell.
[8:10] Goldman Encounters A Friend
RAINES: Myron!
GOLDMAN: Nikki. What the hell are you doin' here?
RAINES: Evac hospital, Chu Lai. I just transferred in.
CREWMEMBER: Come on, Lieutenant. We're outta here!
RAINES: Story of my life, huh?
GOLDMAN: No, wait a minute, wait a minute. I-I tried to get hold of ya, I couldn't find ya. I don't believe it. How do I get in touch with you?
RAINES: Well, my pink princess phone is on the blink, but you can reach me at the... at the hospital, okay?
GOLDMAN: Okay!
[9:55] Discussions On The Road To Do Battle
PEASANT: [speaking in Vietnamese]
TAYLOR: VC come through, burn, and kill. We come through, blow the hell outta everything, and those rice paddy daddies keep on truckin' behind those stupid water buffalo.
RUIZ: And how many wars they been through before we got here? To them it's just another day.
HAZZARD: Every one of them's VC, and just laughin' at us right now.
PERCELL: If anybody's laughin', I'd better not hear it.
HAZZARD: Oh, so you gonna win the war all by your lonesome, huh, Percell?
PERCELL: I didn't come here to lose any war, friend.
HAZZARD: Yeah, well, what did you come for, huh? To be a hero?
RUIZ: Get off it, Hazzard, before somebody forgets which side you're on.
[10:40] Big Zev Stops To Check That Bridge
GOLDMAN: Bravo Six, this is Bravo Two-six, over.
WALLACE [on radio]: This is Bravo Six, go ahead.
GOLDMAN: Six, we've reached objective Eagle. Prepare to secure for the engineers, go.
WALLACE: All right, Two-six, use the mine-sweep team and clear the road and bridge before the tracks come through, over.
GOLDMAN: Two-six, roger, out.
GOLDMAN: Sweep the bridge, call for tracks, and hope Victor Charles is on R & R.
ANDERSON: Be nice if one of us was.
GOLDMAN: Yeah, it'd be nice.
ANDERSON: LT?
GOLDMAN: Hmm? Hmm?
ANDERSON: You've got a faraway look in your eyes. Is there any place or anybody in particular here?
GOLDMAN: None of your damned business, Sergeant.
ANDERSON: I heard that.
[11:36] Anderson Dispatches The Troops
ANDERSON: All right, people! Sixth floor, ladies' lingerie. You can try 'em on, but you can't wear 'em home. Come on. Go, go, go, go, go, move, move, move, move, move.
ANDERSON: How you doin', Percell?
PERCELL: Just great, Sarge.
ANDERSON: He got a letter from his girlfriend sayin' adios. And Ercolani gettin' sent home in a body bag's got him all messed up.
GOLDMAN: Hazzard still on his back?
ANDERSON: Hazzard's still on everybody's back. And Hazzard's gonna be on the endangered species list if he isn't careful.
GOLDMAN: Yeah, well, this ain't the NFL draft; we take what we can get.
POINT MAN: You mean to tell me I re-upped for this, LT? I got men sleepwalking 'cause they ain't closed their eyes in two days.
ANDERSON: Edmunds, you re-upped for the same reason I did, 'cause you ain't got no place else to go.
POINT MAN: No, I re-upped 'cause after I processed out, I was in a bus station in Oakland, in uniform, glarin' everybody down, and I got some sage advice from an old wino. He said, "Clyde, you best head on back to the war now, son, 'cause your mama ain't gonna take you back the way you is."
[12:34] Squad Checks The Bridge
PERCELL: Hey, I thought the ARVN militia was supposed to be guarding this bridge.
JOHNSON: Probably went to the ville to have breakfast.
HAZZARD: Cherries gonna be the death of me yet.
ANDERSON: Is there a problem here? You got a problem, Percell?
PERCELL: No, Sarge.
ANDERSON: If y'all got somethin' to say, I'd like to hear about it. In fact, I might even call Westmoreland in the morning. In the meantime, I'd really appreciate it if y'all paid attention up there.
[13:26] Bridge Secure For Cattle Trucks
GOLDMAN: Roll the trucks.
[14:27] Zeke Eyeballs VC
ANDERSON: Stop the truck!
POINT MAN: Stop the truck! Stop the truck!
GOLDMAN: What the hell is that?
POINT MAN: Stop the truck!
ANDERSON: Stop the truck!
GOLDMAN: Bravo Six, this is Bravo Two-six, over!
GOLDMAN: This is Two-six! I need an immediate dust-off! I've got people down!
TAYLOR: Command-detonated mine. Suckers must've been waitin' for us to complete the sweep.
ANDERSON: Probably headed for that ville right behind the tree line.
GOLDMAN: God.
[15:08] Platoon On Patrol In Village
ANDERSON: All right, this could be hot. Keep your eyes open. Alpha team, let's do it.
ANDERSON: Go... go... go... go.
ANDERSON: VC [speaking in vietnamese] VC [speaking in vietnamese] (transl: Where are the VC? Where are the VC? Here? Here? Here?)
SOLDIER [o.s.]: Hold your fire.
HAZZARD: A kid. Nice shot, Percell, you greased yourself a kid.
VIETNAMESE WOMAN: [speaking in Vietnamese] (transl: Son? Son? Oh, son... (?) killed my son! [something about excessiveness, and whether he knows it])
[17:04] Zeke Counsels a Distraught Danny
ANDERSON: All right, let it go, Percell. You can't account for every bullet fired here.
PERCELL: I didn't come here to kill children.
ANDERSON: Percell, now look, this whole village could be VC for all we know. We don't know who pushed the button on that mine. It might've been a kid.
PERCELL: And it might not have been!
MATSUDA: Sarge, she's got a sick baby here, too. It doesn't look good.
ANDERSON: All right, Doc, you do what you can for the baby. Then let's get outta here. Let's get outta here now.
PERCELL: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen.
[17:52] Danny Goes To Confession
PERCELL: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It's been... I don't know how long it's been since my last confession.
CHAPLAIN: Go on.
PERCELL: I, uh, I'm not very good at this.
CHAPLAIN: You don't have to be. Just say what's in your heart.
PERCELL: Father, I killed a child. A little boy.
CHAPLAIN: Was this intentional?
PERCELL: No! No! God, no. I mean, I-I intentionally pulled the trigger, but I thought it was a man. A VC. Lord, we were there to secure a bridge, and then, I don't know, it all just happened.
CHAPLAIN: I can hear your confession, absolve you of your sins, but all any of us can do is the best we can.
PERCELL: I guess I'm... I'm confused... about a lot of things.
CHAPLAIN: We're all searching for answers.
PERCELL: Yeah, yeah. I guess I am lookin' for answers, as just to what the hell we're all doin' in this godforsaken excuse for a country.
CHAPLAIN: What we're doing here? Son, I'm here to give you comfort and support, but sometimes, I'm just as confused as you are.
[19:35] Pensive Goldman Reflects on Old Flame
Goldman daydreams:
RAINES: You know I don't want you to go.
GOLDMAN: I know. I know.
RAINES: Then don't.
GOLDMAN: If I don't get to Travis on time, I will miss my plane.
RAINES: Then miss it. By all means, miss it.
GOLDMAN: You don't give up, do ya?
RAINES: No, never, ever, ever.
GOLDMAN: Well you wouldn't want me to get court-martialed before I start my first tour, would ya? Would ya?
RAINES: I'm thinking, I'm thinking.
GOLDMAN: Well don't think. Besides that, you wanna know what? I'll betcha that when your orders come through for 'Nam, we'll end up in the same neighborhood.
RAINES: And maybe we won't. Maybe we'll never see each other again.
GOLDMAN: Well then I'll find you. I promise.
RAINES: No promises. Nothing I hate more than a broken promise.
GOLDMAN: I mean it.
RAINES: I know. It's a big war out there. If we find each other, it will be important. But if we don't, then the time we have together will be even more important.
GOLDMAN: Yeah.
[22:18] Danny Visits Lt. Goldman
PERCELL: Lieutenant?
GOLDMAN: What is it, Percell?
PERCELL: I talked to Doc about, uh... Well sir, there was a baby in that ville today.
GOLDMAN: Yeah, there was a baby in the ville. What about it? Spit it out, Percell.
PERCELL: Well this baby was sick, sir, very sick. It needed attention.
GOLDMAN: Percell, there is sickness all over this damn country. Now we just gotta learn to live with it.
PERCELL: Sir, there must be some way. I mean, we've gotta go back, help that family.
GOLDMAN: The ARVNs have secured the bridge. Now we're not goin' back there unless we're ordered to go back there.
PERCELL: Lieutenant—
GOLDMAN: Percell, forget it, just forget it.
PERCELL: Why does everybody keep telling me to forget? If I knew how to forget, damn it, I would, wouldn't I?
[23:04] Goldman Seeks Out Percell
GOLDMAN: Doc, you seen Percell?
MATSUDA: Yeah, this mornin'. He's still worried about that baby.
GOLDMAN: How sick is this baby?
MATSUDA: He looked bad. He's dehydrated, covered with lesions.
GOLDMAN: Could you do anything?
MATSUDA: Well, I gave him a shot of antibiotics for secondary infections, but, I don't know if it did any good.
GOLDMAN: What do you mean?
MATSUDA: Well, some of the people out here have never seen a bar of soap. The water they use is contaminated with human and animal waste.
GOLDMAN: So unless he gets cleaned up, he stays infected, right?
MATSUDA: And God knows what else.
GOLDMAN: Thanks.
[23:36/23:41] Fill Those Sandbags Soldier!
GOLDMAN: I'm looking for Percell.
JOHNSON: He decided to use that pass he was savin' up. He didn't sleep all night.
GOLDMAN: Nightmares?
TAYLOR: It wasn't "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." He was headed for a heavy date with the bottle from what I could tell.
ANDERSON: LT, take a walk?
GOLDMAN: Yeah.
[24:00] Zeke and Myron Take A Stroll
ANDERSON: LT, this side of Johnson, Percell's about the best solder you're gonna find, but this war makes old men outta young men fast.
GOLDMAN: Well a good drunk I can understand. I mean he's gotta blow off some steam, especially under the circumstances.
ANDERSON: Circumstances aren't gonna change, no matter how much whiskey you pour on him.
GOLDMAN: What are you sayin', Percell's goin' south on us?
ANDERSON: LT, if anybody round here's gonna go crazy, I figure I'm first in line, but yeah, Percell's in a pretty fragile state of mind.
GOLDMAN: And we should pay attention.
ANDERSON: If we want back a good solid soldier, we'd better pay attention.
GOLDMAN: Alright, let's go find him.
[24:29] Looking For A Wayward Soul
GOLDMAN: You gotta be kidding. Isn't this place restricted?
ANDERSON: Uh-uh, uh-uh. We just gotta be outta here before dark.
ANDERSON: Mama-san, we're lookin' for one of my troops.
MAMA-SAN: No here. No trouble.
ANDERSON: Now there's not gonna be any trouble, unless you make us make some. You got that, Slim? You look nice.
[25:28/25:36] Found A Drunk Danny Boy
ANDERSON: Well now, how you doin' there, Percell?
PERCELL: Well I'm doin' just great. Real fine.
GOLDMAN: We're givin' you a lift, soldier. Get it together.
PERCELL: Hey, you're wastin' your time, Lieutenant. I can't go back.
GOLDMAN: Why is that, Percell?
PERCELL: I'm getting married, ha ha ha... to ole' what's-her-name here, Brenda.
VIETNAMESE GIRL: Bren-da.
ANDERSON: I'm afraid I can't let you do that, Percell.
PERCELL: Oh, Sarge, how come?
ANDERSON: Well, 'cause I married her myself, last week, didn't I? Except your name was, um... Daphne last week, wasn't it?
VIETNAMESE GIRL: Daphne. GI want boom-boom?
ANDERSON: Now see, what'd I tell you, now, Percell? Women are very fickle creatures.
PERCELL: No, no, Sarge. See, see that woman of mine back home... that one there, she's sharp as a tack. Goin' to college—Missoula! Marchin' in peace marches—
GOLDMAN: Look, Percell, everybody's got an opinion. The point is, your little honeymoon suite here is gonna be crawling with VC after dark.
PERCELL: She thinks we're all baby killers. Ha ha ha ha ha, hell, I guess I proved that.
GOLDMAN: This is a war, people get killed, even kids. It's nobody's fault.
PERCELL: Yeah, like the boy I shot, an' that baby we left in that ville to die.
ANDERSON: All right, now, Percell. Are you gonna get up outta bed, or am I gonna have to pick you up over my back?
PERCELL: Sarge, sarge. Listen to me. You know, I really want you to be my best man with Brenda here.
ANDERSON: All right, Percell, I will be your best man. And I promise ya, honest to God, as soon as we get back to The World, I'll take you to Missoula myself, an' I'm gonna look up that little rodeo queen of yours, I'm gonna tell her what a good soldier you are.
PERCELL: No, no, dammit, no. Now! Now, I want you to be my best man, now!
ANDERSON: Percell, now you're actin' like a jackass.
VIETNAMESE GIRL: Agh!
ANDERSON: Percell, you really done it now.
SLIM: [speaking in Vietnamese] (transl: Those lunatic hooligans!)
ANDERSON: See what I mean?
[27:25] Let The Brawl Begin
GOLDMAN: Oh, Jeez! I think I broke my hand.
ANDERSON: Yeah, the next thing you're gonna hear is the sound of Ho Chi Minh's slippers. Let's get outta here!
PERCELL: Look, Sarge, let's have another drink.
ANDERSON: Percell, you're gettin' to be more trouble than you're worth.
GOLDMAN: Thank you, very much.
[27:57] On The Road Again
GOLDMAN: Spread out along the side of the road and be prepared to move out. As long as we're in the neighborhood, I thought we'd check out that ville. It butts up against the area we're supposed to sweep.
ANDERSON: Alright, does the Captain know about that? I thought we were supposed to move in—
GOLDMAN: Sergeant, we found VC there before. Wanna bet we don't find some again?
ANDERSON: Well, I make it a point never to bet with officers.
GOLDMAN: Why's that?
ANDERSON: Well, it's been my experience, LT, that some are slow to pay, some never stick around long enough to pay.
GOLDMAN: Which one you got me pegged as?
ANDERSON: Can I get back to you on that? Now I know you're doin' this for Percell.
GOLDMAN: Sergeant, I am doing this to dig for VC.
ANDERSON: Alright. Anything you say, anything you say.
[28:50] Zeke Deals With A Repentant Danny
ANDERSON: So, how you feelin' this morning, pit bull?
PERCELL: Like I... Sarge, like I'd like to be flat out, put out of my misery.
ANDERSON: Why don't we tie on the hair of the dog tonight, then?
PERCELL: Sarge, please, unless you want me to wipe my breakfast off your boots.
ANDERSON: No thanks. I've been there. Heck, I tied on a couple my second tour here; I still got brain damage. Look, Percell... we're gonna be goin' back in that ville now. I just wanna prepare you for the worst. I mean that little kid might already be...
PERCELL: And maybe not.
[29:20] Back To The Village
PERCELL: Doc.
PERCELL: Mama-san, I don't mean any harm. No trouble, no trouble. Mama-san, I bring doctor. A doctor, bac si. Bac si, yeah. Bac si for your little one, baby-san. Mama-san, please let me help you. Please.
MATSUDA: It's okay. Shhh, shhh. Shhh. Shhh. It's okay. It's okay.
PERCELL: Doc, how is he?
MATSUDA: He's even more dehydrated than before. His face and body are puffed, belly's distended. He's in bad shape, Danny.
[30:20] Rounding Up Village VC
ANDERSON: Alright, LT, it's like I say: I don't ordinarily bet with officers. But I bet you this little sucker's gonna be hard to get information out of.
GOLDMAN: You think so, huh?
ANDERSON: I know so.
TAYLOR: He ain't got no tongue, LT. At least nothin' but a half of one. Somebody must've cut it off. You wanna see?
GOLDMAN: Spare me, Taylor.
HAZZARD: So what's he gonna tell us, huh? I say we grease this little monkey right now!
GOLDMAN: Hazzard, you stow it, right now!
[30:44/31:09] Three(?) VC for Chu Lai, Captain
HORN: Lieutenant, Captain says it's a negative for a dust-off for the woman and her baby. He can't authorize any—
GOLDMAN: Give me that. Bravo Six, this is actual Two Six, over.
WALLACE [on the radio]: This is Bravo Six, over.
GOLDMAN: Bravo Six, we got three VC here. They may wanna Chieu Hoi. We need an immediate chopper to evac 'em out to S2. Go.
HORN: Lieutenant, I only see one, I don't see three.
WALLACE [on the radio]: Okay, roger, Two Six. Out.
GOLDMAN: Three, Horn. Got it? We got three.
HORN: Yes, sir. Three.
GOLDMAN: Alright, Anderson.
ANDERSON: Sir.
GOLDMAN: I want you to get mama-san and the baby. We're gonna evac 'em out to Chu Lai hospital, then we're gonna take the suspect with us. Then I want you to take the platoon and move 'em back to the firebase. You explain it all to Captain Wallace.
ANDERSON: Yes, sir.
GOLDMAN: Percell, you come with me as a prisoner escort.
PERCELL: Escort?
GOLDMAN: Well you don't think I can do it by myself now, do ya?
SOLDIER [o.s.]: No!
[31:54] Medevac To Chu Lai Hospital
INTELLIGENCE OFFICER: Lieutenant Goldman?
GOLDMAN: Right.
INTELLIGENCE OFFICER: Lieutenant Ferragamo, S2 shop. Where are the Chieu Hois?
GOLDMAN: We don't have any.
INTELLIGENCE OFFICER: We were told there were three.
GOLDMAN: Well, we did have one, but a cat got his tongue.
[32:48/32:58] Child Arrives to Hospital
GOLDMAN: Corporal, I need some assistance.
CORPSMAN: Sorry, sir, I got two deuces coming in with casualties.
GOLDMAN: Uh, Lieutenant Raines, OR or triage?
CORPSMAN: Down the hall to your right.
GOLDMAN: Come on.
GOLDMAN: Excuse me, I have a very sick baby here that needs some attention.
DOCTOR: What d'you think this is? You think you can just drag anybody in here for treatment?
RAINES: Take over for me.
GOLDMAN: Hey, this baby is dying.
DOCTOR: So are these GIs.
RAINES: Mary, IV. Doctor, I need some help here.
DOCTOR: I don't have the time, Lieutenant.
RAINES: Fine, I'll do it myself. Take the mother outside.
[33:55] Danny Ministers To Waiting Mother
PERCELL: Anyway, I, uh... See, I felt it was my duty, even though my mom didn't want me to. My dad fought in Korea, enlisted to fight communism, so I did the same. What about you, sir?
GOLDMAN: I was born to it. Army brat. No place to run and a father that dared me to fill his boots.
PERCELL: Well I know how that is. After Korea my old man did some championship rodeoing. He cut a path I'd have to be Tom Mix to match. Funny thing is, before I came over here, I never saw anybody dead. Except my grandmother, at her funeral. But they told me she wasn't really there, she was in a better place, so I wasn't scared. Now...
GOLDMAN: Percell, you'd have to be a fool not to be afraid.
PERCELL: But I didn't feel a thing when Hazzard was killed, not a thing. Like the first time I went huntin' with my old man an' he took me out an' I shot my first deer. I didn't feel a thing then, either. How do you explain that?
[35:23] Sick Child Report
RAINES: Okay, we x-rayed, we found intussusception, which means part of the intestinal wall collapsed and caused blockage. We operated and now he's on a support system.
PERCELL: Will he be okay?
RAINES: Yeah, the little guy's got a lot of kick. No guarantees but I think the odds are he'll make it alright.
PERCELL: Excuse me.
PERCELL: Mama-san. Mama-san your baby's okay. He's gonna be okay. You understand? He's alright. You no worry. No... no worry.
[36:05] Take A Bath Boy!
GOLDMAN: I don't have a lot of time. I gotta get back to the firebase.
RAINES: Well, I'm off in a half hour. I could meet you at the Officers' Club.
GOLDMAN: Fine.
RAINES: Could you do me one favor, Lieutenant?
GOLDMAN: Anything you want, Lieutenant.
RAINES: Um, your five-day deodorant must have run out a couple of days ago. There's a shower inside at the end of the corridor and I'll have some fresh greens sent down.
[36:34] Goldman Waiting At The Officer's Club
RAINES: Very impressive.
GOLDMAN: Well I've got brain surgery at three so we'd better get on with this.
RAINES: A few more scotches and your hand will be real steady.
GOLDMAN: Well ma'am, if I had to go through what you go through, I think I'd pound a couple of these back before I even got to the starting line.
RAINES: Sometimes you do (your job for (?)) whatever it takes to get you through the night. Sometimes I'm in there twenty, twenty-two hours straight, so damned tired I'm like a zombie, and I still can't get to sleep afterwards. You look like you could use some sleep yourself.
GOLDMAN: I'm sorry about the deodorant thing. Spend a couple of weeks out there in the weeds, an' the human body starts to smell pretty bad. Thanks for the shower. It's almost as good as seeing you.
RAINES: Almost?
GOLDMAN: Well, ya' know, the problem is we don't get running water out there, and you don't make house calls, do ya'?
RAINES: I wish I could be out in the field more, but that MEDCAP may be the last if those rumors of increased NVA activities are true.
GOLDMAN: We hear the same rumors you do. Just hope they're not true. Dig in, lock and load.
RAINES: How many kids you see like that out there?
GOLDMAN: Too many. After a while it's just people dyin'. You don't really think about their size or their color, you just think about yourself.
RAINES: When I was doing basic at Sam Houston, all I could think about was just getting to 'Nam and doing my duty, and going back to something that had a little more sanity to it. Pediatrics. But now I'm thinking about the VA after I'm out. Maybe San Antonio, maybe Dallas.
GOLDMAN: You are a masochist.
RAINES: And you're the one out there being shot at.
[38:34] Strolling Through The Camp
RAINES: So how's it going so far?
GOLDMAN: Well, there's good news and there's bad.
RAINES: Well I figure the bad news is you're here and not back home, married and raising three kids.
GOLDMAN: Got anybody in mind?
RAINES: Well, see, there's my cousin. She's got a good personality, but she's kinda fat and wears braces.
GOLDMAN: Oh, yuck!
GOLDMAN: Well the bad news is all we got at Battalion are people interested in kill ratios instead of fighting effectively.
RAINES: For every officer who turns his back, there'll be ten who go the distance for you.
GOLDMAN: Oh yeah, right! All most of 'em understand are body counts. God, it's like a damn game. All we got are dead bodies to prove we're right.
RAINES: I'm still trying to locate the good news in all this.
GOLDMAN: Well, I lucked out with the platoon sergeant. Kind of a lone wolf, got this kinda crazy quality about him, an' this strange look in his eye like he's in on some secret that nobody else is.
RAINES: Is he?
GOLDMAN: I don't know. I think his secret is that he's not political. He figures the more American lives he can save, the more he's contributing.
RAINES: And all those guys under you. If they're at all like Percell, you really lucked out, you know.
GOLDMAN: Percell's goin' through some stuff, but he'll pull through alright. It's me I'm worried about.
RAINES: What are you talking about? You've got more confidence that anybody I know.
GOLDMAN: Oh yeah, goin' in. Goin' in was easy. It's gettin' out that's gonna be hell.
GOLDMAN: I missed you. I tried to write ya, but I didn't know where.
RAINES: I know, I just haven't been able to settle down long enough.
GOLDMAN: Is there, um, some place we could go?
RAINES: I'm kinda sharing a room.
GOLDMAN: Probably somebody who spent all night in OR. She's gotta get her beauty sleep, huh?
RAINES: Actually, she's on duty for a coupla' more hours.
GOLDMAN: Yeah?
RAINES: Yeah.
[40:29] Meanwhile In The Nurses Quarters
[41:31] Danny Waits With Mother
PERCELL: You know, when I was a little boy, I used to wake up in the middle of the night, scared—not of the dark but, uh, 'cause I didn't know where I was. That's how I feel now. I'm in Vietnam but... half the time I don't know where I am. When I— Uh, when I shot your boy, he became part of me for the rest of my life. And I know now that I have to work through it. I can't put that bullet back in my rifle and there's nothing I can say that's gonna change what happened. I know I have no right to ask you for forgiveness, oh but I'm burning up inside. It's burning a hole in my gut. Mama-san, please. I need you to understand how I feel. Please.
[43:02] I Understand Your Pain
[43:12] Back In Nurses Quarters
RAINES: Myron, I know what it's like out there. I see the bodies coming in: 18-, 19-year-old kids cryin' out in pain. They'll never grow up to be men. Sometimes I think it's God's idea of a really bad joke.
GOLDMAN: Well he's gotta have a sense of humor, doesn't he? Think he's tryin' to tell us somethin'?
RAINES: You know, when you were headed to Travis, you were bound and determined to prove you were a good soldier, a good officer. You wanted to prove it to your father, didn't you?
GOLDMAN: Not anymore. You know what? I am a good soldier, and I'm learning to be a good officer. I know who I am.
RAINES: And where you're going?
GOLDMAN: Yeah. I am going straight to hell. You wanna come?
RAINES: Hell, yes.
[44:19] Outside The Hospital
RAINES: You're smoking too much again, you know.
GOLDMAN: Mmm hmm, I know. But I gave up booze, and women, and sex for my country. I'll be damned if I can't have one vice.
RAINES: So you fell off the wagon for one afternoon. I won't put you on report.
GOLDMAN: Thanks. Nikki?
RAINES: I know. You gotta catch your chopper.
GOLDMAN: Yeah. I'll be back. Maybe we could take R & R, together, maybe Honolulu.
RAINES: Don't tempt me. I might stay forever.
GOLDMAN: Is that a promise?
RAINES: You know how I feel about promises.
GOLDMAN: Well, you take it under serious consideration, kid, okay?
PERCELL: Excuse me, Lieutenant? I squared Mama-san away with the doctor and our ride's waitin'.
GOLDMAN: Our ride, right.
GOLDMAN: Well it's good seeing you again, Lieutenant, sharing your thoughts on military matters.
RAINES: Thank you, Lieutenant. Don't do anything I wouldn't do out there.
GOLDMAN: I promise.
[46:15] Chopper Back To Ladybird
PERCELL: Sir, I just want you to know how much I appreciate what you did—
GOLDMAN: Forget it, Percell, alright?
PERCELL: But sir—
GOLDMAN: You wanna thank me? You do me one favor when we get back.
PERCELL: Sure. What?
GOLDMAN: Don't get me killed, at least not until after my next R & R.
