[0:00] Teaser. To the Rear!

ANDERSON: You aren't gonna believe how lucky we are. What a detail! Listen, we got a half-hour briefing at Brigade, then we got the rest of the afternoon off. You know what that means?

JOHNSON: Afternoon at Mama-san Linda's!

BAKER: Who's Mama-san Linda?

JOHNSON: For starters, she's not your mama!

ANDERSON: But she's definitely what your mama ordered!

JOHNSON: Hey, look it that. A bony growth.

ANDERSON: Horns?

JOHNSON: You better get them trimmed.

BAKER: I gotcha. Hey, I get it. I get it.

ANDERSON: To the rear echelon, my man.

PILOT: You got it!

PILOT: Bluebird Twelve, roger. 223 by 444-566, south bank. Copy that.

ANDERSON: What's goin' on?

PILOT: We got a medevac. ARVN unit on the Pu Chu (?). U.S. advisor got hit.

BAKER: Great.

JOHNSON: Damn.

ANDERSON: We're taking fire!

BAKER: He's dead!

PILOT: We're hit!

ANDERSON: Hang on!

PILOT: We're losin' it! We're losin' it!

BAKER: Oh God!

JOHNSON: Look out!

JOHNSON: Look out for the trees!

PILOT: We're goin' down!

ANDERSON: Hang on! Hang on!

[2:38] Opening Credits

[4:14] Jungle, Firefight

ANDERSON: Let's get outta' here!

ANDERSON: Oh man.

JOHNSON: There's nothin' we can do now.

JOHNSON: Oh no. He's not gonna make it. Look at that chest wound.

JOHNSON: Baker, your back.

BAKER: I'll live. He's not so lucky though.

ANDERSON: All right. Over by the trees over there. Sounds like only a couple of 'em. Watch your ammo. I'm gonna try to flank 'em.

BAKER: Johnson, you see the smoke straight ahead?

JOHNSON: Gotcha.

BAKER: Right there.

[6:04] Anderson, Johnson & Baker

JOHNSON: How'd you do?

ANDERSON: I got one of 'em. But we gotta didi outta here. One of 'em got away and he's gonna be back with all of his cousins.

BAKER: Hey, how are you doin' on ammo?

ANDERSON: I got about eight to ten clips.

JOHNSON: I got three clips.

ANDERSON: Oh boy.

BAKER: What about him? We ought to bury him or something.

ANDERSON: No time.

BAKER: Hey, you know what they do with the dead bodies.

ANDERSON: Baker, the man is already hurt all he's gonna hurt.

JOHNSON: He ain't gonna get any deader.

ANDERSON: Now, let's get out of here.

[6:43] Firebase Ladybird. Goldman, Wallace

GOLDMAN: They had to have gone down somewhere in here.

WALLACE: That's a huge area.

GOLDMAN: Yeah, well, they were out about 15 to 30 minutes, they were headed southeast, they got this call to change course, due west. Some time after that—could have been as long as 20 minutes—they lost radio contact.

WALLACE: So you're telling me they could be down here anywhere.

WARRANT OFFICER: You got it.

WALLACE: Look. Can't you get a hold of the Air Force, get 'em to loan us a few extra ships? These are my people out here; they're good men!

WARRANT OFFICER: My pilots are good men, sir. We're doin' all we can.

WALLACE: Okay. Get goin'.

[7:18] Jungle. A Chopper Overhead

ANDERSON: Wait for Baker, okay?

JOHNSON: You okay, Baker?

ANDERSON (?): You sure?

BAKER: It burns. It burns.

BAKER: They hurt like hell.

ANDERSON: All right, we'll slow up here for a little bit. They won't be expecting us to go north. We'll keep going this direction for a little bit, and then we'll cut east.

JOHNSON: How far do you think we are from the base?

ANDERSON: Forty, 50 miles.

BAKER: No problem, we can hump that in a day and a half.

ANDERSON: Uh-uh. Not cuttin' brush, we can't.

JOHNSON: So we stay off the trails?

ANDERSON: You betcha. We're only about five miles from the Cambodian border. We don't wanna take any chances.

JOHNSON: Hey, listen.

BAKER: Hey! Hey—!

ANDERSON: Quiet, Baker!

BAKER: You know, all we have to do is light a signal fire. Just get a big, clear area and light a fire. They'd be sure to see it.

ANDERSON: Yeah, they sure would.

JOHNSON: That'd be the worst thing we could do, then the whole countryside would know exactly where we are.

ANDERSON: Let's get moving.

[8:30] The VC Discover the Boy

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

VC SOLDIER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

[9:20] Their Favorite Magazines

JOHNSON: Whoa, what you got there? Playboy?

BAKER: No.

JOHNSON: Hey, what the hell is this? It's all surfboards, man.

BAKER: Yeah, it's a surfer magazine. There's a big story on Corky Carroll in there. "Corky Goes to the North Shore," "Corky Toes to the Nose at Trestles and Rincon..."

JOHNSON: What, is Corky a girl?

BAKER: No, man, he is only the best small wave rider in California.

JOHNSON: And you really read this crap?

BAKER: Neah (sp?), mostly I just look at the pictures.

JOHNSON: Gimme a Playboy. Now, there's pictures for ya', right, Zeke?

ANDERSON: Personally, I prefer Popular Mechanics.

BAKER: But they're all white chicks in Playboy.

JOHNSON: Yeah, but they're chicks.

BAKER: Yeah, I see your point.

JOHNSON: See, I'm writin' a letter to the editor so we can try and put some more sisters in there.

BAKER: I've never seen a naked black chick before.

JOHNSON: Well, they've got extra thick skulls and they can't swim.

BAKER: Really?

JOHNSON: Your mama, Baker.

[10:14] Montagnards

ANDERSON: Get down.

ANDERSON: Get out of there. Get out of there. Get out of there. Get out of there. Get out of there. Get!

BAKER: Oh God.

JOHNSON: Don't look at it, man. Don't pay it no mind.

BAKER: Oh my God.

JOHNSON: I don't believe this.

BAKER: They're all dead.

ANDERSON: They're Montagnards.

BAKER: Who?

ANDERSON: Montagnards. They're mountain people. Like, uh, Indians or gypsies.

BAKER: Who could've done this? I mean, they're just civilians, right?

ANDERSON: I don't know. There's no love lost between the VC and the Montagnards, but it's my guess these people just got caught in the middle of things.

JOHNSON: Looks like they got mortared or artillery.

ANDERSON: All right. You guys poke around in this stuff. See if there's anything we can use.

WOUNDED WOMAN: No, no...

JOHNSON: Over here, quick! This one's alive!

JOHNSON: 'kay, it's all right. It's gonna be all right, okay? We're here to help you, we're here to help you.

ANDERSON: (?)

JOHNSON: You speak any English, lady? Huh? Any English?

BAKER: Can you figure out what she's saying?

JOHNSON: No, something's wrong, she's doesn't seem to be hurt too bad—

ANDERSON: That's it.

BAKER: What's it?

ANDERSON: She's gonna have a baby.

BAKER: Oh man.

ANDERSON: All right, now, we've gotta do something. Either of you guys, uh, know anything—

JOHNSON: Having a baby? Uh-uh.

BAKER: My mother had one.

ANDERSON: I hope so, Baker.

BAKER: When— She had one of my brothers when I was five.

ANDERSON: Well did you learn anything you would like to share with us here?

BAKER: Hey, in the movies, they always get hot water, though, right?

JOHNSON: Question is, what do they do with the hot water?

BAKER: Give her a bath, maybe?

BAKER: No, no, no, no. I mean, for the baby. It does come out all gooey and stuff, you know?

JOHNSON: I can't stand listening to this.

ANDERSON: I think we should be tellin' her to breathe deeply.

BAKER: Oh yeah. She doesn't know how to breathe already?

ANDERSON: Well we've got to do somethin'.

BAKER: That's for sure.

JOHNSON: But what?

BAKER: Cowabunga.

JOHNSON: Shouldn't we give him a spankin' or somethin'?

ANDERSON: No, that's to get it breathin', but it's crying, so, it's already breathin'.

BAKER: Yeah, that's right.

ANDERSON: So, uh, Johnson, pick it up.

JOHNSON: Nuh-uh. You do it.

ANDERSON: Excuse me.

ANDERSON: Okay. Here you go. All right. Here you go.

ANDERSON: Yeah. Here you go. All right. There you go.

BAKER: She don't look so good.

ANDERSON: Yeah. Listen. I say we didi outta here.

JOHNSON: We can't just leave her here.

ANDERSON: We've done everything we could.

JOHNSON: We didn't do nothin'.

ANDERSON: That's everything we could.

BAKER: Man, she's lookin' scraggly.

ANDERSON: Uh, listen, lady. I'd like to help ya, honest to God, but I don't know exactly what to do. I mean, if, if, if we had a radio, we could medevac ya. We've got hospitals back in the rear with all kinds of equipment and stuff, and... Hey, those doctors, man, those doctors they ju-ju-just jump at the chance to deal with somethin' normal like havin' a baby, but uh... You know... Well look, uh... You want some water? It's not very cold, but, uh, open your mouth, otherwise it'll...

ANDERSON: Lady? Oh no.

BAKER: Is she dead?

ANDERSON: Yeah.

[14:52] The Baby

ANDERSON: All right, we're in enemy territory, we're out of ammo, we're bein' followed—

JOHNSON: What are you driving at?

ANDERSON: Hard decisions, Johnson.

JOHNSON: Like what?

ANDERSON: This baby. It's gonna slow us down.

BAKER: You don't wanna leave it here, do you?

ANDERSON: The way I see it, Baker, we don't have any choice. Charlie's about an hour behind us. If we leave the baby here, then they have to take care of it, they have to deal with it.

JOHNSON: You really expect them to take care of it?

ANDERSON: Yes I do, as a matter of fact, and the baby's better off with its own people anyway.

BAKER: It's a Montagnard baby, though.

ANDERSON: So what?

BAKER: So VC hate Montagnards.

ANDERSON: Baker, it's a baby. A baby's a baby. These people love babies.

BAKER: Yeah, yeah, that's right. Bad guys love babies more than we do, right?

ANDERSON: Baker, I don't like this any more than you do. But I figure we don't got a chance if we have to slow down to babysit an orphan that doesn't have a hope in hell anyway.

ANDERSON: My job's keeping you guys alive. And I'm gonna do that job whether you like it or not.

JOHNSON: Okay, look. Maybe he's right. Now, the baby should be okay for a couple of hours.

ANDERSON: Come on. Let's get out of here.

BAKER: Let me keep it, please. Come on, I'll keep care of it, all right?

ANDERSON: Now tell me something, Baker. How do you intend to fire your weapon if you're carryin' a baby in your arms?

BAKER: Look, I really don't care what you say. I'm keepin' it. Johnson, you with me on this?

JOHNSON: Looks like you're outnumbered, Zeke.

ANDERSON: Now get this straight, soldiers. This isn't a democracy here. I'm the sergeant, you're the private.

BAKER: Why don't you go ahead and court-martial us? I don't care.

JOHNSON: Yeah, what are you gonna do? Send us to Vietnam?

[16:47] The VC

[17:28] We're in trouble. We're in very serious trouble.

BAKER: Look, look, Sarge, once you make contact, we'll just medevac him back to Da Nang. I mean, they got people back there that could take care of him.

JOHNSON: Yeah. They've got orphanages and stuff.

ANDERSON: Orphans don't got a hope in hell. Not in this world, they don't.

BAKER: I don't know about that.

ANDERSON: Shut up.

BAKER: I mean, this kid could grow up to be Albert Einstein or something. He was an orphan, wasn't he?

JOHNSON: I think so.

BAKER: Well so was Corky Carroll.

JOHNSON: Who?

BAKER: That guy? The— In the magazine? "Toes to the Nose?"

JOHNSON: Man, I can't relate to that. I can't even swim.

ANDERSON: I said, shut up back there.

JOHNSON: Damn. Got a hair up his nose...

BAKER: Isn't he pretty? He's so pretty...

BAKER: Hi.

BAKER: Come on. There, there, baby, don't cry. Don't cry.

JOHNSON: Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top...

BAKER: Come on.

JOHNSON: When the wind blows, the cradle will rock.

ANDERSON: Oh, come on, Johnson. Do you really think that's gonna help anything?

BAKER: Well it might. It's makin' me sleepy.

ANDERSON: Let me give you some advice, all right?

JOHNSON: Shoot.

ANDERSON: All right. A baby can't talk, right?

BAKER: Right.

ANDERSON: Right.

ANDERSON: So crying is a baby's way of saying the baby wants something, right?

BAKER: Yeah, his mom. He wants his mama, poor thing.

ANDERSON: Yes, yes, the poor thing wants his mom. Because his mom has what he needs.

ANDERSON: Food! The baby needs food.

JOHNSON: I guess babies don't like c-rats, huh?

BAKER: We need milk.

ANDERSON: Very good, Baker, very good.

ANDERSON: Now, the bad news is, the baby needs mother's milk. The human kind.

BAKER: Hey, maybe for now, he'd settle for a little water. You got some?

BAKER: Give him a little.

BAKER: Hey, look what I got. I got some water for ya, junior.

BAKER: Aw, that's nice.

BAKER: There you go. Mmm, that tastes good, doesn't it?

ANDERSON: We're in trouble. We're in very serious trouble.

BAKER: That's a cutie pie. Aw. There you go.

[19:30] Goldman at the Scene of the Wreckage

RADIO: What do you got down there, over?

GOLDMAN: Well the wreckage is burnt to hell. We've got four Americans, KIA. I don't know who the hell they are. Go.

RADIO: Could it be Anderson? Do you think there were any survivors, over?

GOLDMAN: Negative. I don't know. I just can't tell. Out.

[19:49] The Goat

Anderson, Johnson and Baker come across a small farm and they get a little more than they bargained for.

JOHNSON: VC?

ANDERSON: I don't know.

BAKER: [looking around nervously] Let's get outta here.

ANDERSON: No! Uh uh! You see that goat?

BAKER: Yeah.

ANDERSON: That's what the baby needs. It's not the same kinda milk as his mother, but it'll do in the meantime. Johnson, come with me. Baker, you stay with the kid! [Anderson and Johnson head down the path and take up a squatting position behind a fence and try to get the goats attention]

ANDERSON: C'mere goat. Goat? phsst goat, c'mere goat, phsst goat, goat, c'mere. C'mere goat, goat c'mere, phsst. [But the goat wont come]

JOHNSON: I dont think it speaks any English.

ANDERSON: WHO?

JOHNSON: The goat!

ANDERSON: Oh man! Lai dai. Lai dai goat, lai dai. [the goat looks up momentarily and then goes back to chewing on the vegetation. Zeke lets out a frustrated sigh] UGH. Lai dai. Lai dai goat, lai dai. [the goat wont obey, much to Andersons annoyance. He turns and says to Johnson] That works real good too, dont it? [Time for plan B] Wait here! [Anderson sneaks up behind the goat] OK Goat. Stay cool. Stay very cool.

BAKER: [rocking baby Judd in his arms, trying his best to keep the boy from crying] shhhh It's ok. It's ok.

ANDERSON: [unties the goat and leads it over to where Johnson is waiting] Come on baby. Come on.

JOHNSON: Back here. Back here Zeke.

ANDERSON: Good goat. Alright! [he turns to Johnson] You ever milk one of these?

JOHNSON: Who me? Sure! All the time.

ANDERSON: Oh man! Get out your canteen. Put it underneath there. I'll give it a shot.

JOHNSON: OK.

ANDERSON: [gets himself into position beside the goat, placing one of the animals legs between his knees to hold it still while he milks it. He grabs a hold of its rather large teet and cannot believe the size of the thing!] Oh man? I'm used to cows! This is a whole different set of arrangement. Oh man. Johnson? Don't EVER tell anybody I did this! [The goat doesn't take too kindly to being held by a stranger and it kicks Anderson in the privates.] Goat! Owwww!! [He grabs the animals leg a little tighter, letting it know he's the boss] Goat? Stop it, would you? [once he has control of the goat he works the teet] OK. Squeeze at the top...work it down like that.

JOHNSON: [hears the sweet sound of milk filling the canteen] I think you got it.

ANDERSON: Yeah? [pleasantly surprised]

JOHNSON: [smiles at the NCO] You missed your calling.

[The old Vietnamese lady that Anderson spotted earlier, spies the pair trying to milk her goat and she's not happy. She runs toward them, yelling at them in Vietnamese, and waving her stick at them.]

JOHNSON: Uh-oh.

ANDERSON: [immediately stops milking the goat] Okay lady, now don't get excited. All we want's a little milk. Now you can... you can spare a little bit of milk lady. You can spare a little milk. [the old lady wants them gone already and gives Anderson a few stinging whacks on the arm with her stick.] OWWWWW!!

JOHNSON: Look, it's for a baby. Babysan. Number one.

ANDERSON: [joining in] Yeah number one.

JOHNSON: You understand?

[The old lady's not interested in reasoning with them. They're the enemy and they're trying to steal her goat. She whacks them both, again and again, protecting what is rightfully hers.]

ANDERSON: Oh, come on, now, lighten up, lady. Now lady... I can't stand gettin' hit like that, now stop it!

ANDERSON [to Johnson]: GET the stick! [he's unable to as he's got his hands full fending off the womans blows and trying not to let go of the goat]

JOHNSON: [is also getting hit all about the body.] Ouch. Get the stick!

ANDERSON: Dont do that! It's for a Vietnamese baby. enbé enbé [spelling??] Johnson, get the stick from 'er. GET IT from 'er!

JOHNSON: You get it from 'er.

ANDERSON: YOU get it from 'er. [he then turns to the old lady who he's not too fond of right now and yanks the stick out of her hand] You old WITCH! The old lady grabs a hold of the goat and hangs onto it with all her might. Zeke now has a real tug of war on his hands, and Johnson doesnt seem to know whether to intervene or stay the heck out of it.

ANDERSON: Johnson, get the goat from 'er. [Johnson does as ordered, and grabs the goat. As soon as he does, the old lady lunges forwards and tries her hardest to stop him]

ANDERSON: Now look lady...[He grabs her by her arms to keep her from taking off with the goat. But she's feisty and breaks free]

ANDERSON: God, I dont believe this.[He's tried to be a gentleman to this point, but enough is enough] He wraps both his arms firmly around the old ladys waist and lifts her clean off her feet. He holds her there in mid air, kicking and screaming. She somehow gets her arms free and starts whacking Anderson about the head with her hands.

ANDERSON: OUCH! Lady?.. Lady, all we wanted was a little milk. If you gotta be this way, I'm gonna take the whole damn goat. Johnson? Take the whole damn goat! Get outta here!

JOHNSON: [nodding in agreement, he grabs the goat and their M16's and scurries off] Sorry Ma'am but this is war.

ANDERSON: [cant wait for the day to be over] Get outta here Johnson.

[Once Johnson and the goat are safely out of sight, Anderson puts the lady down.]

ANDERSON: I'm sorry lady.

[he runs off after Johnson. Leaving the old lady standing there in a state of shock and quite visibly shaken]

OLD LADY: [pointing her finger at the retreating Americans] GI Number 10. GI Number 10 [10 meaning they are very bad in her eyes] and VC. VC Number 1. VC Number 1.

[22:24] Just use your noggin, Baker

ANDERSON: All right. There you are, Baker.

BAKER: There you go. Come on. There you go...

BAKER: It's not working.

ANDERSON: Oh man, you guys don't know nuthin', do ya?

BAKER: Hey, maybe I'll just pop down to the nearest A&P and buy him a baby bottle, huh?

ANDERSON: All right, here. I'm gonna show you a little trick. Y'all watch and learn here.

BAKER: Hey, he likes it. [to Judd] You like it.

ANDERSON: Just use your noggin once in a while, Baker. That's all I ask.

[24:03] Anderson and the Baby

BAKER: Oh, there he goes again. What do you think is wrong with it?

ANDERSON: You guys are complete idiots.

BAKER: Hey, look, I just asked a question. I mean, you tell me what's wrong with it, and I'll fix it.

BAKER: Hi, baby.

ANDERSON: The baby needs burping. You feed a baby, you gotta burp the baby.

BAKER: Would you show me how?

ANDERSON: Baker, you know, you been in the sun too long.

BAKER: They didn't teach me that kind of junk in basic training. All they taught me was how to crawl through barbed wire.

JOHNSON: So how come you know so much about this stuff?

ANDERSON: Because I do, all right?

ANDERSON: Give me the kid.

ANDERSON: Oh man... Oh man. Look at this. Poor little thing. Doesn't have a hope in hell.

ANDERSON: Do you have any idea what it's like to be an orphan in this world, Baker?

BAKER: Huh-uh.

ANDERSON: I'll tell you what. It's one kick in the butt after another. I hate to be the one to tell you this, kid, but you'd have been better off if you'd never been born.

[25:53] Baby Love

BAKER: Get him, will you?

ANDERSON: Baby, give me a break, will you please? Just a little sleep is all I'm askin' for. Come on. It's all right. It's all right.

ANDERSON: It's just artillery. Yeah. Yeah. It ain't about nothin'.

ANDERSON: Shh. Baby love, my baby love... Ooh-ooh, I love you, love. Mmm. Why aren't we making up? Mm-hmm hmm hmm. Instead of breaking up?

ANDERSON: Baby love, my baby love. Ooh-ohh, I love you, love. Mm-mm... Mmm. Instead of breaking up. Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh. Ooh-ooh, baby love. Ooh-ooh, I love you, love. Why are you doing this? You know you got us in this mess. And what you're doing is gonna screw the whole thing up. So please shut up.

VC SOLDIER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

[28:18] Judd

ANDERSON: All right, listen up, you guys, uh. I've been thinking. Uh, this kid here, doesn't have a name, all right? So I was thinkin' maybe, uh, maybe "Judd," huh? How's that sound to you guys?

JOHNSON: It's all right by me.

BAKER: I don't care.

ANDERSON: Yeah?

BAKER: Yeah.

ANDERSON: All right, then. Judd.

ANDERSON: There's a guy back in Boise, Idaho named Judd. Judd Sibaugh. He's a good man. Old Judd Sibaugh is the closest thing to a blood relative I got. He worked for the Boise Department of Welfare. That old dude would go out of his way to visit us in the homes.

JOHNSON: Homes? What kind of homes?

BAKER: You were an orphan, just like him.

ANDERSON: What, are you guys writin' a book, or what?

BAKER: It's cool.

[29:05] Hiding from the VC

ANDERSON: Hold it. Crickets have stopped. Spread out.

ANDERSON: Let's get out of here!

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

JOHNSON: That way.

BAKER: Where are you taking us?

JOHNSON (?): Just take care of that baby! Follow me.

JOHNSON: We're stuck! We can't go any further.

ANDERSON: We'll hide here. Get down.

VC SOLDIER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

ANDERSON: Shh, Judd, shh. I'm beggin' you. Come on, I'm beggin' you.

BAKER: Quiet him.

ANDERSON: Come on, Judd. I'm beggin' you, buddy. I'm beggin' ya.

BAKER: Shut him up!

ANDERSON: Please, baby. Judd, please. Okay, okay. Shh.

ANDERSON: Oh God, please, Judd, be quiet. Please God.

BAKER: All right.

BAKER: Come on, let's get the hell out of here.

[32:12] Johnson's plan

ANDERSON: Okay, Judd, boy, don't you ever, ever, ever do that to me, again. Honest to God, son, when I tell you to be quiet, now son, when I tell you to be quiet, you gotta be quiet, son.

JOHNSON: Look at him, he's shivering.

ANDERSON: I'll tell you what, he got wet; that's why he's shivering. I mean, just feel him. He's cold. He about froze his private parts off in that water.

BAKER: We almost lost him out there.

ANDERSON: Hey, you almost lost me, buddy.

ANDERSON: How you doin' on ammo?

BAKER: Terrible.

ANDERSON: All right, the trick's gonna be to avoid all contact. We gotta get 'em off our tail.

JOHNSON: Okay, how about if I split off, and make a bunch of tracks headed west? And circle around, maybe meet you guys top of that ridge?

ANDERSON: Hey, that'll be dangerous.

JOHNSON: Ain't nothin'.

JOHNSON: I'm gone.

[33:24] Vasectomy

BAKER: You know that cryin' is drivin' me nuts?

ANDERSON: There are a lot of things drivin' me nuts. [to Judd] You hungry?

BAKER: That noise is gonna give us away.

ANDERSON: Well hell, Baker, why don't I just gag him?

BAKER: Look, I'm just pointing it out, that's all. Maybe I'll have that vasectomy after all.

[34:10] Anderson, Baker, & Judd

ANDERSON: What'sa matter, Judd boy? How come you're cryin', huh? What'sa matter with you? Why you doin' this to me? Huh, you hungry? Well, I got some bad news, old buddy. We lost your goat. Yeah. Maybe we can give you a little water, here, though. Yeah, maybe we can. Hold still now. I gotcha'. [to Baker] Gimme my canteen.

ANDERSON: Yeah, yeah.

ANDERSON: Pour some of that on my...

ANDERSON: Yeah.

ANDERSON: Here you go (?)

ANDERSON: Oh God, he's hot, man. Feel him.

ANDERSON: He's hot.

ANDERSON: Okay, let's just keep goin', buddy. Come on, Judd, buddy. Come on, buddy.

[35:14] Modus Operandi

[Johnson whistling]

[Anderson or Baker whistling back]

JOHNSON: Got 'em. Tricked 'em real good.

JOHNSON: Guess I fooled 'em for about a hot second, huh?

JOHNSON: Well I could shed a few tears, too.

ANDERSON: Here, you hold him.

ANDERSON: All right. You guys keep the same direction. And I'll catch up with you later.

BAKER: Where you going?

ANDERSON: I'm gonna slow 'em down a little bit. Give them a little of their own modus operandi.

[36:37] The Quick Way Out of Here

BAKER: Hey, Anderson. Hey.

BAKER: Here. Over here.

BAKER: How'd it go?

ANDERSON: Did all right. What are you guys doin' here? You're supposed to be over on that ridge.

BAKER: Shh. Look. Look, the baby's really sick.

ANDERSON: Oh man, he's burnin' up.

JOHNSON: He won't take water, either. Nothing seems to cool him down.

BAKER: Zeke, I'm really worried. I mean, he's messed up. Looks like he might be dying.

ANDERSON: Oh God, his heart's beatin' like crazy.

BAKER: We gotta get him some help, get him to a hospital.

JOHNSON: Look, even if we get these dudes off our trail, we still have at least a day's walk ahead of us.

ANDERSON: All right. All right, we-we know the quick way out of here.

JOHNSON: Signal fire.

BAKER: Yeah, but the dinks.

JOHNSON: They're gonna be on us like water on rice.

ANDERSON: We got some time, I mean, I slowed 'em down some. Well, I mean, I'm not tellin' ya this is somethin' we oughta do, it's just that, uh...

BAKER: Let's go for it. Johnson, you with me?

JOHNSON: Yeah, I got [some kind of like for the] little dude. (?)

ANDERSON: All right, all right.

[38:10] Long Enough to Make a Difference

JOHNSON: This ought to do it!

ANDERSON: Yeah.

BAKER: I got some bigger pieces here.

ANDERSON: Johnson!

JOHNSON: Now?

ANDERSON: Yeah, yeah, yeah!

ANDERSON: C'mon. Get it goin'!

VC SOLDIER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

BAKER/JOHNSON: Help!

JOHNSON: Over here! Help! Help!

BAKER: Hey!

BAKER/JOHNSON: Over here! Help!

JOHNSON: Maybe we can put it out real fast.

ANDERSON: No. Uh-uh. There's no place to hide, now, so just pile it on. Come on, come on!

BAKER: That's all of it.

ANDERSON: It's okay now, Judd. Just hang in there, buddy. Hang in there, now. You're gonna be all right. We're gonna get you medevaced out of here. Get you back to the rear and the hospital nurses. Oh boy, they're gonna be waitin' for you, son.

ANDERSON: Ain't you somethin'? Yeah, ain't you somethin'?

BAKER/JOHNSON: Hey! Help! Over here!

JOHNSON: Here we are!

JOHNSON: He's seen us!

BAKER: He had to be calling for help.

JOHNSON: They'll be back. He had to have seen us.

BAKER: Had to.

JOHNSON: Yeah.

JOHNSON: How's the baby?

ANDERSON: Oh, I don't know, Johnson. I'm really worried.

JOHNSON: Hey, you know, my sister lost a baby once. A tiny little thing. Just a couple months old.

JOHNSON: You know, it's funny. You wouldn't think a kid that young would even [been] in the world long enough to make a difference. But it did.

JOHNSON: It really did.

[40:13] Firefight

BAKER: Damn!

ANDERSON: Johnson! Johnson!

BAKER: Get down, get down!

ANDERSON: Can you see where they are?

BAKER: Yeah, yeah. They're right down there.

ANDERSON: Hold your fire. Make them reveal themselves.

ANDERSON: Johnson! Johnson, you talk to me! You talk to me, Johnson! You talk to me!

BAKER: He's breathing, he's breathing.

VC SOLDIER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

BAKER: You know, if I could just get over behind that rock over there, I think I might have an angle on 'em.

ANDERSON: All right. I'll cover you. Ready? Go!

BAKER: Agh! Agh! Agh! Agh!

ANDERSON: Agh!

VC LEADER: Agh!

BAKER: My eyes! Oh... My eyes!

ANDERSON: No. No.

[42:50] Look What We Did

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

ANDERSON: He's dead. Go on. Look at him.

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

ANDERSON: He's just a baby. God, man, he's just a baby. He's just an orphan, man. And we killed him; you and me, buddy.

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

ANDERSON: He's not even a person yet, you know? He's just, he's just like somebody's hope that something decent might happen in this world, and we killed him. I mean, look at him!

VC LEADER: [speaking in Vietnamese]

ANDERSON: Look at him! Damn it! You look at him!

ANDERSON: He never even had a chance! He didn't have nothin'! He got nothin'! You and me, buddy, look what we did! Look what we did.

ANDERSON: Look what we did.

ANDERSON: He never had a chance. Look what we did.
