[01.43] Newbies

[03.50] Just got here my own self

TAYLOR: These boys got cherry written all over ‘em.

RUIZ: Hey Sarge, what’s goin’ on?

ANDERSON: I dunno Ruiz, I just got here my ownself.

HOCKENBURY: Looks like the senior class trip. Kids!

PERCELL: Not for long.

[04.17] Sgt Hannegan

???: … right – that’s it. Back it ??? a little bit.

PERCELL: Hey! What the hell is this?

TAYLOR: Hey, what you guys doin’ in our hooch? Hey!

TAYLOR: Oh Lord!

HANNEGAN: You boys are back earlier than I expected. You’ve ruined my little surprise.

PERCELL: What are you doin’ Hannegan?

RUIZ: This is personal property Hannegan.

HANNEGAN: We’ve got new people coming in an’ they got no place to sleep.

TAYLOR: Hannegan, you can’t … shack us up with a bunch of FNG’s.

HANNEGAN: Y’all had this hooch to yourselves too long anyway. Welcome back to the army boys.

HOCKENBURY: Look Sergeant, we’ve been out for five days an’ we’re tired an’ we’re hungry an’ we’re dirty……

HANNEGAN: Ooh, I can tell. You smell like a dog that’s rolled in something real fresh.

HOCKENBURY: So I tell you what. We—um—we’ll just go—stand under some hot water for a while and—um we’ll—we’ll come back when you’re done.

HANNEGAN: Make it an hour. I’ll have these men heave your goods back in the hooch an’ you can set up housekeeping to suit yourselves.

[05.36] Duke Fontaine’s info

GOLDMAN: Sir, we swept this entire area in here and there’s absolutely no indication of a force of either North Vietnamese or VietCong.

STRINGER: It doesn’t make sense. The information was damn specific.

DUNCAN: The CIA was convinced.

GOLDMAN: The CIA? Was this Duke Fontaine’s information? Colonel, Fontaine will terrorize these people into saying whatever the hell they think he wants to hear.

STRINGER: I wouldn’t trust the information if they gave it willingly. Hell I know it’s a crap shoot but it’s the only game we’ve got. We have to check it out.

DUNCAN: Command is almost certain the enemy will launch a countrywide offensive during Tet, just like last year.

STRINGER: MacV has attached Camp Barnett and its’ Special Forces teams to the Capital Military Security Command. Now our specific objective is to secure the five provinces around Saigon.

DUNCAN: You’ll be working with regular infantry units while attached to this command.

GOLDMAN: Working with or part of?

STRINGER: It’s gonna vary. Each assignment could be different.

GOLDMAN: What about the SOG missions?

STRINGER: Those go on. The downside is replacements. They’re not gonna have the kind of experience your team needs so you’re gonna have to make allowances for it.

GOLDMAN: Well begging your pardon Sir, this sounds a little rough around the edges to me.

[06.50] Recruiting from the cubs

ANDERSON: Sergeant Edwards. Looks like you used up all the boy scouts now you’re headed for the cubs, right? According to my information two of these puppies are mine. Bell an’ Griner. Bell! Griner! Step forward.

GRINER: I’m William Griner.

ANDERSON:  ???

GRINER: William.

ANDERSON: Oh William. Where you from William?

GRINER: North Carolina.

ANDERSON: Is that right? My daughter’s in Fayetteville.

GRINER: Don’t know it. I’m from above ??? mountains.

ANDERSON: Oh I see. Bell?

BELL: Yes Sir, I’m Eddie Bell from—from--from Texas.

ANDERSON: Eddie Bell from Texas, I gotta be honest with you. You don’t look near old enough to be in this man’s army.

BELL: Yes Sir I know—I know—my whole family’s like that. They just look younger than they are.

ANDERSON: Uh ha. Well I don’t know why in God’s name they assigned y’all to a SOG team but welcome to Camp Barnett.

BELL: SOG team?

GRINER: Yeah what’s that?

ANDERSON: SOG—S-O-G. Same old grind. Y’all grab your gear – we’ll find out what’s that.

[07.58] New room mate

MCKAY: Goldman. Come on in.

GOLDMAN: I really must be beat, I thought this was my hooch.

MCKAY: No Goldman wait….

GOLDMAN: McKay, not now, I gotta get some sleep.

MCKAY: Come on in roomie, an’ close the door would you. We can’t keep the whole camp cool.

GOLDMAN: What are you doin’ here McKay? McKay, what the hell are you doin’ here?

MCKAY: Hey mellow out man. Enjoy the cool air for a change. Have yourself a beer. Didn’t Colonel Stringer tell you?

GOLDMAN: Tell me what?

MCKAY: Well they wedged a full platoon of grunts into my digs. Well you were gonna have to share your hooch with somebody so I figured what the hell – why not me?

GOLDMAN: Oh McKay. McKay!

[09.04] Just want some sleep

GOLDMAN: Alright, I just wanna get some sleep.

MCKAY: Relax Goldman – enjoy the tunes. You’ll sleep a lot better I promise you. Have yourself a smoke.

GOLDMAN: I don’t wanna smoke – I just wanna get some sleep. Okay?

MCKAY: Suit yourself.

[10.00] Your side, my side

GOLDMAN: Your side – my side. Nothing from your side comes on to my side – including music. Goodnight.

MCKAY: Sweet dreams.

[10.35] Helping Eddie

GRINER: It’s just like goin’ up an’ down a ladder. Puttin’ it back is just the (other side?) of takin’ it apart.

BELL: Okay I think I can get that. I think.

RUIZ: I don’t care if it is mystery meat. I’d rather have our regular chow than C-rats any day.

TAYLOR: I still can’t believe what they did to this place.

PERCELL: Yeah, it stinks don’t it. Hannegan – we oughta get him for this guys.

RUIZ: Quit dreaming.

TAYLOR: Yeah, you’d just give him one more reason to make life miserable for us. How many cots you need cherry?

GRINER: What?

TAYLOR: You’re sittin’ in my bunk.

GRINER: Oh sorry about that.

BELL: He was just helpin’ me with strippin’ down a weapon.

TAYLOR: Ain’t nothin’ to it, even a baby can do it.

TAYLOR: What you laughin’ at?

RUIZ: It’s that rhythmic negro jive you speak Taylor.

GRINER: What you said, it was funny.

TAYLOR:  ??? funny. You hear that Roo? Sound to me like the call of a red-neck clod-hopping hillbilly.

RUIZ: C’mon Taylor give him a break, he just got here.

TAYLOR: I don’t think so. You from the land of clam boy? Huh? The land of cotton, the land of strange fruit?

GRINER: I got no bone to pick with you.

TAYLOR: Oh I bet you don’t to my face but behind my back is a whole different story, huh?

GRINER: I got nothin’ against colored people.

TAYLOR: I ain’t colored. I’m black.

GRINER: Be whatever you want to. You ain’t nothin’ to me.

RUIZ: Alright—alright—alright—alright. Come on. Just drop it. Ain’t no point to this.

TAYLOR: Nah, that’s the point right there Roo -- you heard what he said didn’t you? I ain’t nothin’ to him. See the black man don’t exist as a human being to people like him. Southerners man.

PERCELL: Taylor – Roo’s right man. Why don’t you let it go. Ain’t no point in it.

[12.30] Slept like a baby

ANDERSON: LT! How’d you sleep?

GOLDMAN: Like a baby Sergeant.

ANDERSON: That’s good. Felt good to wake up in my own rack myself. Listen LT, have you seen these new replacements? Some of ‘em are barely in-country.

GOLDMAN: Yeah OJT just like always.

ANDERSON: On the job training is one thing in a rifle platoon LT, in a SOG operation they’re not up to it.

GOLDMAN: Well it’s our job to bring ‘em up to it.

ANDERSON: Whatever you say.

[12.55] Briefing

STRINGER: I’ve got a report here of NVA activity (SC8?) – probably accurate.

GOLDMAN:  ??? indicate some question as to the source of information. It wouldn’t happen to be Fontaine would it?

STRINGER: Yes it would but there are other signs. They all point to a big NVA build-up in ??? province so we are going to monitor the situation.

DUNCAN: You’ll be in charge of one platoon Lieutenant ??? your team.

STRINGER: It’ll be a good chance to check out what some of these new men have got.

ANDERSON: What they’ve got Colonel is green.

STRINGER: Well I’ll rely on you to ripen them up Sergeant.

DUNCAN: Yankee Sierra at three-six-six-eight-two-seven. The location of one of our old jump CPs, not used in over six months.

STRINGER: Sergeant, you take half of the force and set up a patrol base – probe the area for twenty four hours. Twelve kilometers away is a major NVA supply route (junction?). I want that area laced with electronic surveillance sensors Lieutenant then we can eavesdrop and see if the enemy is building up.

GOLDMAN: Uh Sir, we just came off a recon based on Fontaine’s information and it was all wrong. There was no Victor Charles.

DUNCAN: So if he’s wrong again, you’ve got nothing to fear.

GOLDMAN: The point it Sir, that if he says there’s NVA we may just as well run into Genghis Khan.

STRINGER: Well regardless of who you run into Lieutenant, you’re to avoid contact. We wouldn’t want the NVA to know you’re in the neighborhood.

[14.13] New guys, new stuff

HOCKENBURY: Isn’t that the army way, give the new guys new stuff an’ they don’t know beans about how to use it.

GRINER: Even a blind hawk finds an acorn now an’ then Doc.

TAYLOR: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

HOCKENBURY: It just means that—um—everybody has an occasional turn of luck Taylor.

TAYLOR: What are you speakin’ for this newby cracker Doc?

HOCKENBURY: Cut it out Taylor, he (ain’t done?) nothin’ to you.

TAYLOR: You. You need somebody to talk for you?

GRINER: No I can make my own way.

TAYLOR: Oh really? Well you do that – stay out of mine.

[15.04] What’s up Taylor?

RUIZ: What’s raggin’ you Taylor? Why you on the newby’s case?

TAYLOR: Don’t jerk me Roo, you heard him.

RUIZ: No, I ain’t heard him. I ain’t heard him say one damn thing against you.

TAYLOR: I’m talkin’ about the way he talks. He’s got the sound of a racist. Them southerners are the original reason the black man having such a hard time, right ???.

HOCKENBURY: Come on Taylor. You can hardly call Griner part of the ruling class.

RUIZ: You know I think you spend too much time listening to Shakey Williams an’ his ??? friends. That’s what I think.

HOCKENBURY: Yeah, I mean look at me man, I’m from the south – I’m from Memphis an’ you don’t see me goin’ around……

TAYLOR: You ain’t exactly (anonymous/synonymous?) with the black man’s friend of the month either Doc.

HOCKENBURY: What is that supposed to mean?

[15.38] Bell still packing

BELL: Think I’m gonna need me another ruck.

PERCELL: Hey, you ain’t finished packin’ your gear yet? What’ve you got in there?

BELL: My goods.

PERCELL: Bell, what’re you thinking?

BELL: Just thinkin’ that if I left it here somebody’d take it.

PERCELL: Nobody here’s gonna take this stuff. Everybody here’s already got this stuff. You mind tellin’ me why you’ve got three canteens of water?

BELL: That’s for brushing my teeth. I like to brush my teeth a lot.

PERCELL: You like the taste of it do you? Yeah now that’s okay—that’s okay. I like the taste of it myself, but don’t—don’t carry water for that. Use ground water okay

BELL: I thought that was dangerous.

PERCELL: That’s why they gave you halzone(sp?) tabs. So Bell why don’t you put this stuff back in your foot locker an’ I’ll go ahead an’ pack this up, okay.

BELL: Okay.

PERCELL: Hurry up, we’re ??? already. Come on.

[17.08] Instructing the newbies

GOLDMAN: This is a sensor – Roo. You take the small spike and insert it in the ground alongside the trail. The wire attached to the spike is an antenna. You extend this to its full length and conceal it lightly alongside the trail. The box unit is a transmitter, you conceal it well because it is the easiest part to see. Now the sensors that we’re setting today are gonna be set to a designated frequency…….

ANDERSON: ….. there’s an old jump CP of ours so they’re might already be some protection there. However when we pulled out we took everything with us but the sandbags, so don’t be surprised if we have to do some diggin’ to make the place livable again. Each of you has been issued two dozen empty sandbags. When we get there, we’ll dig out the bunkers until they’re about chest high. The dirt you take out of the bunkers, you’ll fill into your sandbags – pile ‘em around the bunker like a wall of dirt.

GOLDMAN: Alright listen up. Everybody stay alert and keep your eyes open and your mouths shut. When in doubt, do what the guys in the tiger stripes do. Let’s saddle up – first squad on the bird.

[18.30] Walking through the jungle

[19.15] Watch your step

PERCELL: Watch your step. Always watch where you put your foot. Check your weapon – barrel’s full of dirt. Clear the ???, get a stick an’ clear it out. Shoot it like that it’ll blow up in your face. C’mon, do it on the move.

[19.53] Checkpoint Blue Marlin

GOLDMAN: Fireside Three, this ……… Fireside Three this is Blackhorse Six. Over.

RADIO: This is Fireside Three, go ahead Six.

GOLDMAN: Three, confirm checkpoint Blue Marlin. Over.

RADIO: Roger Six. Fireside Three out.

GOLDMAN: Let’s do it.

ANDERSON: Taylor, you got point. Percell! Let’s go, c’mon. Alright one last time, watch your intervals, watch your step. Out in the open, open up – in close, close it up. Good luck LT.

GOLDMAN:  ???

[20.59] Elephant

[21.24] Snake in the river

???: Snake!

HOCKENBURY: Alright, I got it.

[22.04] Elephant patrol

[22.23] Setting out sensors

GOLDMAN: Make sure you keep it hidden.

[23.54] Sarge’s team reach destination

ANDERSON: There it is.

[25.24] Not such a bad defence

ANDERSON: Alright now people stay alert in here, watch your step. Spread out along the perimeter there an’ what’s left of the bunkers, clean ‘em out. Square away your sandbags, set your fields of fire. We’ll do a clover leaf recon of the area, find out what’s around here. Then we’ll take a break an’ have some chow.

PERCELL: Hey Sarge, this isn’t such a bad defense - little bit of work.

TAYLOR: A lot of work. How long since this place been used Sarge?

ANDERSON: They said six months.

TAYLOR: Six months! Don’t take mama nature long to claim what’s hers. You know what I’m sayin’?

ANDERSON: RTO.

PERCELL: Ain’t so bad. At least we’re not fillin’ these up.

[26.23] No choppers available

STRINGER: Major.

DUNCAN: Colonel. Yes Sir, sorry to disturb you Sir.

STRINGER: What is it?

DUNCAN:  ??? at Tan Son Nhut Colonel. Several of our choppers are stuck(?), supposed to extract Goldman and re-supply Sergeant Anderson’s patrol before ???.

STRINGER: Can’t we shuffle deployment?

DUNCAN: Not without scrubbing something somewhere.

STRINGER: Get ‘em on the horn.

DUNCAN: Yes Sir.

DUNCAN: Blackhorse Six this is Fireside Three, over.

GOLDMAN: Go ahead Three, this is Six.

STRINGER: Six, get on your TAC frequency and tell Five to get in on this.

ANDERSON: This is Blackhorse Five, already with you.

STRINGER: Sitrep Five.

ANDERSON: No sign of bad guys. Recon out in two-zero mikes.

STRINGER: Six?

GOLDMAN: The ears are out. We are five-zero-zero mikes November Lima Zulu. Go.

STRINGER: Can stick?

GOLDMAN: Affirmative. Go.

STRINGER: How’s it covered Five?

ANDERSON: Got everything I came with. Over.

STRINGER: Nothing needed?

ANDERSON: Nothing needed.

STRINGER: No eighteen hundred drop Five. You’re both out at zero-six hundred. Copy?

GOLDMAN: Blackhorse Six, affirmative, over.

ANDERSON: Blackhorse Five, solid copy.

STRINGER: You’re never alone with a bedside phone gentlemen, so stay in touch. Fireside Six, out.

[27.36] Harmless as tobacco

PERCELL: Taylor, throw me some C4 will ya?

BELL: What’s that stuff?

PERCELL: C4, it’s a plastic explosive Bell. I’ll tell you what, it’s as hot as a blow torch.

GRINER: Thought that stuff was dangerous.

PERCELL: Yeah it is but not without a detonator, it’s about as harmless at tobacco.

BELL: I got something on me.

PERCELL/GRINER(?): Get him down—get him down—get him down. Come on.

BELL: Get it off of me!

PERCELL: Okay. Now calm down—calm down.

BELL: Get it off.

PERCELL: Here hand me—give me your bug juice. Relax Bell. Relax, that’s nothin’. Just a little tree leech. You’re alright. It’s not gonna kill you Bell.

GRINER: It may not kill you, I’m just not partial to bloodsuckers myself.

BELL: Me neither.

PERCELL: You get used to ‘em boys.

[28.33] Mosquitoes

TAYLOR: The mosquitoes down here man, they’re worse than the ones down at the swamp. The ones here, they crawl up a man’s nose while he’s asleep – suck all blood out of his brain.

[28.55] NVA

ANDERSON: Percell  ??? Taylor

TAYLOR: Hey.

ANDERSON: You fire line’s there—there.

ANDERSON: Bell, you alright?

BELL: Hell yes.

ANDERSON: Are you scared?

BELL: Hell no.

ANDERSON: Percell, keep these boys ??? and watch your flank.

PERCELL: Yeah it’s this flank I’m gonna be watchin’ Sarge.

[31.14] Attack

ANDERSON: I can’t tell how many, they’re everywhere.

DUNCAN: Get the Colonel.

[31.37] Call in Arty

GOLDMAN: Can we call in arty Five? Over.

ANDERSON: That’s a negative, they’re too close. They’re a few meters away. We’re alright for now Six.

GOLDMAN: Dammit.

RUIZ: Isn’t there something we can do LT?

GOLDMAN: Roo, I got you an’ I got me. I got fifteen newbies and I got a conchie medic. This place is riddled with booby traps and it’s about to get dark. There isn’t a helluva lot I can do.

[32.09] Another attack coming

ANDERSON: Look alive!

ANDERSON: Alright Percell, you’ve got it here.

[33.42] Too close for arty

ANDERSON: They’re comin’ at us in waves, ten or fifteen meters apart. Must be two hundred of ‘em out here.

GOLDMAN: Anderson, you’ve gotta call for arty, over.

ANDERSON: That’s a negative Six, they’re too close.  ??? green line at twenty meters but it’s movin’ in fast. They’re smart, they know we can’t call in a fire mission if they’re that close.

[33.56] Got to get air support

STRINGER: We have got to get some air support in there.

DUNCAN: I’ve already tried Sir. I can’t get anything until first light.

STRINGER: You mean to tell me we’ve got nothing we can send?

DUNCAN: I’m afraid so Sir.

[34.06] Still under attack

TAYLOR: Miller, get down!

[34.39] Request permission to move in

GOLDMAN: Fireside, request permission to move in, over.

STRINGER: Negative Six.

GOLDMAN: Repeat Fireside, request permission. Over.

STRINGER: Negative Six, negative. It’s almost dark, you’d never make it. Even if you did, Anderson’s men would cut you down in the dark thinking you were the enemy.

MCKAY: Colonel, I’ve got the only available chopper. Request permission to fly support Sir.

STRINGER: With what? That ship’s got nothing but two M-60’s.

MCKAY: Yes I know Sir, but it’ll just help them out to know that we’re up there. I can pop flares in when it’s dark, it can help them see. It’s better than what we’ve got and we’ve got nothing right now. Colonel!

STRINGER: Do what you can.

MCKAY: Yes Sir.

[35.08] The battle scene

PERCELL: They’ll be back won’t they Sarge?

ANDERSON: Yeah, you can pretty much count on that Percell. You okay?

PERCELL: Yeah, yeah Sarge I’m okay.

ANDERSON: How you doin’ here Bell?

BELL: Alright.  ??? that Clark boy over there.

ANDERSON: Alright, stay with it.

ANDERSON: You alright Mason(?)?

MASON(?): Yes Sarge.

ANDERSON: How long’s he been like that?

MASON(?): I don’t know.

ANDERSON: Soldier, are you hurt? Now look, if you’re not hit you get up there an’ do your part. Are you scared? Huh? You better be. I swear to God, if I find you like this again, I’m gonna throw you up there myself. I’m not gonna have brave men here risking their lives for a coward. Can you hear me? Listen to me, get your butt up there an’ do what you were trained to do. Now. Do it. That’s right.

[36.57] In a hole Taylor

ANDERSON: What’s the matter Taylor?

TAYLOR: I really hurt ??? Sarge.

ANDERSON: Oh man, I’m sorry. Where is it?

TAYLOR: It’s my leg.

ANDERSON: Your leg Taylor. How the hell d’you get hit in the leg? You’ve been in a hole.

TAYLOR: I’ve been in here too long Sarge. I got the worst Charlie Hoares(sp?) I ever had.

ANDERSON: You know Taylor, every time I think I’ve heard it all – all I gotta do it talk to you an’ I realize I haven’t heard nothin’.

[37.30] One of the scared ones

GOLDMAN: Six.

ANDERSON: I got two dead, one wounded and fifteen scared as hell. I’m one of the scared ones. Over.

GOLDMAN: Did they pull out? Over.

ANDERSON: Negative. No chance, they left too many behind.

GOLDMAN: Can you pull back? Over.

ANDERSON: No Sir, they’re all around us - a lot of ‘em. Here they come again.

[38.27] Too generous on ammo

ANDERSON: Hold your fire! Hold your fire! Percell?

PERCELL: We’re real low on ammo Sarge an’ I’m out of grenades.

ANDERSON: Taylor, report!

TAYLOR: Three an’ a half clips Sarge.

ANDERSON: Alright, we’re bein’ way too generous on ammunition out here now. Put ‘em on semi automatic an’ pick your targets. Pick ‘em good.

[38.54] Radio's dead an' it getting dark

ANDERSON: Radio’s dead. Radio’s dead an’ it’s getting’ dark.

[39.15] Goldilock's on his way

GOLDMAN: Fireside, we haven’t heard from Blackhorse is thirty minutes. We’ve gotta do something. Over.

DUNCAN: We’ll have air support there as soon as it’s light Six. Over.

GOLDMAN: We’ve gotta do something now. Over.

STRINGER: Hold the phone Six. Goldilocks One is on the way to Five’s position. We should have a sitrep in thirty minutes.

GOLDMAN: Fireside, they could be dead in thirty minutes.

STRINGER: They’re probably already dead.

[39.38] Kiss the old wazoo

NVA: You die GI. You die GI.

PERCELL: Taylor.

TAYLOR: Yo?

PERCELL: You hear that?

TAYLOR: Yeah, I heard ‘em. GI you die, you die GI.

GRINER: You stink dink.

PERCELL: Taylor, if I do gotta die here, I want you to bury me face down.

TAYLOR: Why’s that Danny?

PERCELL: So Vietnam can kiss the old wazoo.

ANDERSON: Sshh.

PERCELL:  ???

[40.42] Check on Bell

ANDERSON: Hold your fire! Hold your fire!

PERCELL: Hold your fire.

ANDERSON: Ammo?

PERCELL: I’m down to the quick Sarge. You’d better check on Bell.

ANDERSON: Bell! You hit? You alright? Look at me—look at me. Hey, take a deep breath—take a breath. Breathe – alright, take a breath. Breathe – relax. That’s right, just relax. You’re gonna be alright. It’s alright to be afraid.

BELL: Not—not afraid. This happens every time I get real excited about somethin’.

ANDERSON: So you’re not afraid?

BELL: No sir, we’re all gonna die up here. My bein’ afraid ain’t gonna change a damn thing about that.

ANDERSON: You know what Eddie Bell from Texas? You talk like a lifer but I look at you I see a kid. Don’t I? Tell me the truth, how old are you?

BELL: Fifteen.

ANDERSON: Oh Lord!

BELL: Chopper!

[41.47] Goldilock's arrived

MCKAY: Fireside, I have a signal flare. I’m gonna light it up. Give ‘em some light Smitty.

MCKAY: Pop a couple more flares Smitty, we’re gonna help ‘em out.

PERCELL: Sarge!

MCKAY: Fireside. Fireside. I’m takin’ fifty caliber rounds from the ground. I’m gonna back off repeat, I’ve gotta back off.

[43.08] Hang on till dawn

STRINGER: If they could just hang on till dawn, we could put so much fire power in there.

[43.13] Night time battle

[44.00] No sign of life

MCKAY: Fireside, am in sight of jump CP. There is no movement, no sign of life. Repeat, no movement, no sign of life. Wait a minute, check that last transmission Fireside.

MCKAY: I’ve got movement, there are men alive on the ground. You hear me Goldman? There are men alive on the ground.
